CAST Lecture: The Muhammad Cartoons, Abu Ghraib, the hanging of Saddam Hussein – images are essential to 21st century security politics. They have instant, global circulation; they are produced by non-traditional media actors such as soldiers, political activists, artists, and ordinary citizens; and they provoke us to respond. But images do not come with a simple recipe for action: they do not tell us exactly what needs to be done and governments must therefore negotiate what they mean and what their political consequences should be. This lecture lays out the challenges that images pose for security studies and suggests how we might theorize them. Read more
