Christine Sylvester is Professor of International Relations and Development at Lancaster University and the 2010-2011 Kerstin Hesselgren Chair at Gothenburg University. Sylvester is known worldwide for her path breaking contributions across a range of fields: gender, development, war/peace and the politics of art and museums. This one day workshop on visuality, security, and art will be a great opportunity to discuss recent work by Sylvester as well as that of Lene Hansen and Diana Andersson Biró. Read more
Visual Securitization: Threats, Genre, and Temporality

Images play an important role for security policies and conceptualizations. They are mobilized by securitizing actors who seek to convince their audiences that particular threats are worthy of collective response, and they work as media through which the past and present are constituted. Visual representations arise within particular spaces yet have the capacity to gain worldwide circulation and appropriation. This seminar will discuss how we might theorize and analyze the role images play for security through four papers that address genres ranging from memorials to video and film. Read more
