New Post.Doc. at CAST working on Intelligence ethics

Kira Vrist Rønn has received funding from FKK for a postdoc project on Intelligence Ethics. The project will address the overall question: How should intelligence services conduct their activities in order for these activities to be morally justified?

The project will emphasize one particular dimension of this question: the proportionality condition. Hence, morally justified intelligence activities are dependent on a proportionate relationship between the expected relevant harms or wrongdoings caused, i.e., in the process of gathering intelligence on one side, and the seriousness of the threat averted (the relevant good effects), on the other side. The central research questions of this project are:

How ought the proportionality condition of intelligence activities (and the elements hereof) to be specified?

How can this specification contribute to the development of an ethical code of conduct of intelligence activities?
