PhD defence: Health security in the European Union: Agents, practices and materialities of securitization

On 5 June 2019 Louise Bengtsson defended her PhD thesis Health security in the European Union: Agents, practices and materialities of securitization at the Department of Economic History and International Relations, Stockholm University. Her contribution examines the emergence and implications of 'health security' as an area of European Union (EU) cooperation. The study, consisting of five independent articles, is based on extensive field work at the European Commission and the EU Agency for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Theoretically, the thesis highlights how different approaches to securitization can be employed as empirically sensitive analytical tools and thereby add to a better understanding of the full prism of securitization processes.
